Cataract Awareness Month

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the U.S., but msot cataracts are treatable with surgery. The doctor removes the damaged lens and replaces it with an artifical one. Cataract surgery is 95% succesful. This eye condition mostly affects people over 40 and the causes range from diabetes, eye disease, eye injury, or eye inflammation. Intense heat, smoking, oral steroids, or hereditary influences can also contribute to the formation of cataracts.


Cataracts are an eye condition where the lens of one or both eyes become covered with cloudy areas. Symptoms of cataracts are seeing halos around lights, seeing faded colors, having blurry vision, trouble driving, reading or doing other tasks.


Cataracts can be prevented by having your eyes checked on a regular basis. If you have not seen your optometrist or ophthalmologist in the last year, please call them and schedule an appointment.
